Above is an AI generated image, that on close inspection doesn't make much sense. It bears resemblence to human made art, but at the same time feels extremely uncanny. The individual who is regarded as the first person to coin the term, "AI Slop", Simon Willison, defines it as "unwanted AI generated content".
AI Slop has crept its way into many facets of our world, one such example is social media, where it has seen wide use. Above is a Youtube Shorts video about AI slop featuring Shrimp Jesus. There are also additional images featured in this video that overall paints AI Slop in a negative fashion.
AI generated content is relatively new, with its rise to the mainstream being from 2022 to present day. Overall it is closely tied to Web 2.0, and is extremely distant from Web 1.0, with AI Slop being a byproduct of AI generated content.
Unlike the previous video, this video makes use of AI to generate entertainment rather than critque. These two different usecases are some of many that exist for AI, and overall demonstrate that public view on AI Slop is mixed, with some people wanting to use it for engagement while others condemn it.
Present day AI Slop can be found everywhere, and it has been used for some extremely distasteful activities, with Slop being misleading political junk, digital harassment, to harmless yet annoying content that is essentially just spam.
